Matthew Berry

Matthew BerryFrom the age of 5yrs to 22yrs I frequented as many martial arts classes as I could to say I had a passion for martial arts would be an understatement!

I have studied Judo , Karate , Aikido , Jujutsu and even a short time in western style boxing, but then I found Internal martial arts I have been studying and training in Yang style Tai Chi Chuan and various chi kung systems since 1998 even after 10yrs of serious study I am still only scratching the surface of these truly amazing arts. I have also studied Xing yi and Bagua zhang at a very basic level.

Tai Chi & Chi Kung have become as much a part of my life as brushing my teeth, I can’t imagine my life without them, although being a struggle at times, the rewards I have had since training and teaching have been truly amazing. I lead quite hectic lifestyle, working full time in a high pressure environment, being a father to my four beautiful children, being a husband to my very understanding Wife who hardly ever sees me ( a secret to a long and healthy marriage) although I must confess to a list of jobs to do around the house as long as my arm! I firmly believe that since taking up these arts I have far more energy than I had when I was 20. I also have the clarity of mind to deal with stressful situations, I don’t get ill like I used to,

My body is far more flexible and supple than it used to be, so all in all life is good. I can honestly say that Tai Chi has changed my life and given me the tools to manage my busy schedule and to keep me humble , calm and relatively sane!

I have found over the years that it is not the exercises that change or get more advanced its more that I have changed through them, in my opinion you get out what you put in , a bit like driving your car.

I am sure most of us know far more about our cars than we do our bodies! If you don’t put much fuel in your car you won’t get very far on your journey or if you fill it up and don’t ever maintain the engine then you are likely to break down somewhere on that journey too. So a little bit of maintenance and regularly topping up with fuel will provide many hassle free miles. The same with our bodies!

Tai Chi / Chi Kung I believe can give us the time, space, knowledge and energy we need to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. By learning to relax our mind, our body and our breath we can balance our emotions and internal landscape and live in harmony with the space around us.
